Description
This twining perennial vine native to the hardwood forest of the eastern U.S. is an effective anti-spasmodic for the digestive system and the uterus. Contains progesterone precursors and diosgenin, an important raw material for the pharmaceutical industry. Native Americans used it for labor pains. Attractive, shiny, heart shaped leaves and large tuberous roots which are dug in Fall. This plant requires a trellis and prefers part shade. Hardy to zones 4-8.
