PLANT HARDINESS ZONES

The Plant Hardiness Zones divide the United States and Canada into 11 areas based on a 10 degree Fahrenheit difference in the average annual minimum temperature. The United States falls within Zones 2 through 10.

Suggested hardiness zones have been indicated for all trees and perennials available. If zones 4-9 is indicated, the tree or perennial is known to be hardy in zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Suitable hardiness means a plant can be expected to grow in the zone’s temperature extremes, as determined by the lowest average annual temperature.

Do not limit your choices based solely on the zone map. first of all the map itself is changing as our overall Global  climate changes primarily becoming wormer with extended frost free days and milder winters  in many climates now . On the other hand factors such as drought or endless summer rain can be huge factors as well. Winter hardiness can be changed radically by deep snow cover and sheltered areas along walls of heated buildings. Every piece of land has diverse micro climates throughout the growing area. The cold pocket where frigid air lays frost that lingers longer than anywhere else  whereas up the same hill mid slope maybe there is no frost at all. These are the nuances to pay attention to when planting gardens and they allow you to push the boundaries of the plant zones and experiment !! Be bold plant something your neighbors say will never grow there and then enjoy their pleasant suprise when in fact it grows very well in the right spot!!
