Description

Datura metel (Moonflower) is a tender perennial species native to South and Southeast Asia and long documented in traditional medical and ceremonial systems. The purple double-flower variety produces large, layered, trumpet-shaped blooms in deep violet tones. Flowers open in the evening and are fragrant at night. Fun to grow! Plants grow quickly and develop a shrubby form in a single season.

In historical ceremonial contexts, Datura metel was not used casually or communally. Its presence marked rites concerned with thresholds such as illness, anesthesia, trance, or restraint, and its handling was overseen by priests, physicians, or ritual specialists. Rather than serving as a general vision plant, it functioned symbolically and ritually, emphasizing containment, discipline, and strict limits due to its powerful physiological effects.

In Ayurvedic and Siddha traditions, Datura metel is associated with Shiva, the ascetic god of transformation and dissolution. The plant is still offered in temples today as a symbol of restraint and spiritual danger. Historically, it was used externally for pain, inflammation, and spasms, and internally only in minute, highly controlled preparations by trained practitioners. Knowledge of preparation and dosage was held within lineages and not considered general folk practice.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Datura metel (yang jin hua) is recorded as an anesthetic and antispasmodic, historically used in surgery and cases of severe pain. These uses were precise and professional. The plant’s tropane alkaloids—scopolamine, atropine, and hyoscyamine—can easily cause delirium, paralysis, or death if misused.

All Datura species contain stramonium and other potent alkaloids. Every part of the plant—leaves, roots, flowers, and seeds—is toxic and must never be ingested. It is grown today strictly as an ornamental or teaching plant and should be handled with care.
