Why Certified Organic?

Echnacea with Butterfly
USDA Certified Organically Grown Medicinal Plants, Certified by CCOF

What does it mean to be Certified Organic?

At Crimson Sage Nursery, we have always used organic methods and strongly believe that it is the best way to insure a sustainable and productive garden and produce healthy, robust nursery stock. Our nursery is inspected each year and we file a detailed annual report of our fertilizer inputs and pest problems in order to become USDA certified organic with CCOF.
Unfortunately, most commercial nursery operations utilize tremendous amounts of chemical fertilizers to promote lush plant growth along with extremely dangerous systemic and sprayed pesticides to control insects in a greenhouse and propagation situations. Unwitting, consumers do not realize that the lush green plant in a pot at their local hardware store or nursery has been raised with numerous applications of various chemical fertilizers and potentially systemic pesticides.

We are proud to be one of a small handful of Medicinal Herb Plants Nurseries that are USDA Certified Organic. Crimson Sage Nursery adheres to the philosophy that the best herbal medicine is made from healthy, organically grown plants, grown in a living soil, teeming with microbial life in a garden filled with thriving, beneficial insects, pollinators, and nectar lovers, along with birds and wildlife including, hopefully, a few reptiles!! We go to great lengths to provide a soil mix for our plants that nourishes microbial balance along with promoting strong root development, and a stout plant ready to be planted in your garden. We have found that over the last 25 years working with plants that the healthier the plant, the less pests will bother them. Most herbs are inherently pest resistant due to the high essential oil content in their leaves and those that have a hole or 2 in a leaf can grow through it and be stronger plants as a result. We hope this encourages you to let your backyards be a little wilder. Realize that a diverse garden is an abundant garden, and nurturing a microbial rich soil which is truly alive is the best insurance for our future on this beautiful planet!!
