Description
Also known as Wild Pansy, Violet, Pansy, Sweet Violet, English Violet, Violetta, Johnny Jump Up, an infusion from the herb was said to ease a broken heart hence, the common name ‘heartsease’. The aerial parts are valuable in treating skin diseases such as eczema, psoriasis, acne and even cradlecap in babies. The herb is also used as a diuretic, antipyretic, tonic, laxative and anti-inflammatory. Contains salicylic acid and salicylates, saponins, flavonoids (high in rutin up to 24%) tannin, mucilage.
Does best in partial shade in rich, moist soil with good drainage and mulched to maintain soil moisture. Deadhead and cut back to encourage second bloom. Zones 2 to 10
