Description
Angelica pubescens, commonly known as Du Huo (独活), has been a key herb in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. It is primarily used to dispel wind and dampness, making it an important remedy for joint pain, arthritis, and lower body ailments. While its relative Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica) is often used for upper-body conditions, Du Huo is valued for treating pain and stiffness in the lower back, knees, and muscles. It is commonly included in formulas to improve circulation and alleviate deep-seated discomfort, especially in cold or damp environments.
This hardy plant is native to the cool, mountainous regions of China, where it thrives in moist, shaded environments. To cultivate Du Huo, growers must mimic these conditions by planting it in rich, well-drained soil with partial shade. In its first year, it develops a base of deeply lobed leaves, and by its second year, it sends up tall flowering stalks with delicate white umbels, reaching heights of up to four feet. The most valuable part of the plant, its root, is harvested in late autumn when its medicinal properties are at their peak.
This Chinese Angelica is a beautiful specimen with lush green leaves reaching up to 6 feet in height in fertile soils. Prefers a moist, but well-drained soil and dappled sun. Hardy biennial/perennial. Hardy in zones 6-9.
