Description

Pink dandelions (Taraxacum pseudoroseum) are a relative of the common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). Unlike their widely known yellow cousins, pink dandelions boast delicate, pale pink petals with a yellow center, making them a unique and visually striking addition to gardens and wildflower landscapes.

Pink dandelions are native to parts of Central Asia, particularly regions of Kazakhstan and nearby areas. They thrive in meadows, grasslands, and open fields with well-draining soil. Though less common than the yellow dandelion, they share many of the same hardy, adaptable traits.

Like common dandelions, pink dandelions possess a variety of medicinal properties and have been used in traditional herbal medicine. Some of their potential benefits include:

The roots, when dried and brewed into a tea, may help promote liver function and aid digestion. Pink dandelion greens are less bitter than yellow dandelion greens but similarly act as a natural diuretic, helping to support kidney function. The plant contains antioxidants and compounds that may help reduce inflammation in the body. The latex in the stems has historically been used to treat warts and skin conditions, though care should be taken as some people may experience skin sensitivity.

While not as extensively studied as the yellow dandelion, pink dandelions do share many of the same beneficial compounds, including vitamins A, C, and K, as well as minerals like potassium and iron.

Growing pink dandelions is relatively easy, as they are hardy and adaptable.  They prefer well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Full sun is best, but they can tolerate partial shade.  Keep the soil moist but not overly wet. Once established, they are drought-tolerant. Pink dandelions self-seed readily but are less invasive than yellow dandelions. Deadhead flowers if you wish to control their spread. Leaves can be harvested for salads, while roots can be collected for teas and tinctures. Harvest in the fall for the highest medicinal potency.

Hardy in USDA zones 3–9. They can tolerate a wide range of climates, from cold winters to warm summers, much like their common yellow dandelion relatives.
