Description
Chinese Mahogany, Xiangchun. This tree is much revered in China for its beautiful wood, while the young shoots and leaves are a popular vegetable often found in stir frys and cultivated as a “Tree vegetable” for this purpose. The flavor is very aromatic and similar to onions. The bark of the mature tree is used in TCM for dysentery and flatulence. The Toon will eventually grow into a large ornamental tree. The compound leaves and reddish stems make even the young seedling Toons very attractive. As I am always on the lookout for perennial/medicinal foods, the Chinese Toon seems like a great addition to the perma-culture herbscape. Perennial. Very hardy to zone 5.
